When you see this sign on Tilson Ave.,  you're almost there because to the right of it is Captain Spear Drive with Windjammer Wharf  - and Bufflehead! -at the end.

GPS

GPS: "3417 Capt Spear Dr Rockland, ME  gets you to the end of our road, by the dock.
We finally got Google to recognize our road!    "Captain Spear Drive, Rockland, ME"

The GPS car systems are concerned with roads, not boat piers, so I've included some notes to get you to good parking, right by the pier.
  • In the GoogleMap below, Windjammer Wharf is the docks at the corner of the land, filled with boats.
  • Park behind Main St, ) and/or in the public parking lots by Hamilton Marine, or along Tillson Ave.  Walk up Captain Spear Dr and onto the dock!
  • Written driving directions at bottom of page.
  • If you're on a mobile device, turn it sideways to see the whole map!

Parking

Bufflehead has a berth at Windjammer Wharf, off Captain Spear Drive in Lermonds Cove in the heart of Rockland's downtown.  When not sailing,  Bufflehead is tied up to the pier at Windjammer Wharf.  GPS "3418 Captain Spear Drive" brings you to our road/dock, but don't park on Captain Spear Drive.

Parking is available either on Tillson Ave, or in the municipal lots between Tillson & Winter Aves, or behind the Main St buildings.  Rockland has adopted a paid parking scheme in these lots.  A footpath (part of the Harbor Trail) connects from the N end of the back lot to the pierhead, and up to Main st by the ferry terminal.  It is also quite possible ( and for longer sails, possibly recommended) to park in the side streets across the ferry terminal and walk the harbor trail to us.  A public restroom is located by the flowers and trees and parking on Tillson Ave.

The parking areas are indicated in the map below along with the green stripe of the harbor trail.  The parking along Capt Spear Dr is for long term schooner passengers, please try to avoid parking there.   There is also an aerial picture with some mapping overlaid on the About / Rockland, Restaurants and Links page.  This map is sideways to the satellite picture above.

Driving

  • From the North,  Follow Rt 1 and come around Union St, (Rt 1 S) until it turns left to rejoin Rt 1 N by Dairy Queen, turn Left towards the water, down Park St, with Rite Aid on your right.
  • From the South, you'll be coming in Rt 1 N, and get to this same spot. You can see the water ahead, straight through the light at Park st & Main st.
  • At the corner of Park St & Main St, by Rite Aid, where you can see the water ahead, you can go straight at the light onto Park Dr, and that loops around to face Windjammer Wharf, and Captain Spear Drive where Park Dr stops at Tillson by the Coast Guard and Gemini Canvas.
  • There's parking to the left up Tillson Ave, either on street or in the municipal lot.
Or, if you want to come down Main St.
  • At the corner of Park St & Main St, by Rite Aid, where you can see the water ahead, turn Left onto Rockland's Main St (North on Rt 1).
  • After passing the Strand Theatre and the Farnsworth Museum turn Right at the traffic light at Tillson Ave, about half way down Main St. As you turn, Curator (a men's consignment shop) will be on your left and Ruckus Donuts will be on your right.
  • Turn Right onto Tillson Ave at the light, heading towards the water.  The first left goes into the parking lot behind the buildings, on the right is a municipal parking lot, and the second left is Capt Spear Drive.
  • On street parking on Tillson Ave is without time limits.

If you have things to drop off, you can drive down Capt Spear Drive, but please park as described and walk down to the pier because the parking on Capt Spear Dr is for the long term schooner passengers, not the Buffleheaders.

What to Bring

It can often be a bit cooler on the water, so bring an extra layer.  If it's sunny, bring a sunhat, glasses, sunscreen.  Dress to be outside!  Bring anything you like to eat or drink, or check out our Before you Sail page for some local options to pick food up.

Street
View

This Google Street view, below, (red arrow up) is looking North up Captain Spear Drive.   Windjammer Wharf and the boat are there, if you zoom in you can see the masts & dock pilings over the cars in the lot of Gemini Marine Canvas, which is the white building which is #50 Tillson Ave.

By turning left with the compass thingy, you can turn West towards Main St and see the parking on Tillson Ave and in the municipal lot.

A second left brings you around to face South, Park Drive comes in to the left of the walking man in the Hamilton Marine Parking lot.

The other view looks East down Tillson Ave with the brick US Coast Guard "Bird Block" building on the left.
