When the name "Smith" is totally unique
C'mon, look at that sweatshirt. That is the coolest "logo" you will ever see for a sail charter. For anything, really.
The image is a mystical depiction of Bufflehead gliding above the foaming breakers as it rounds Owls Head light with the Rockland Breakwater in sight on a return to its home port. The scenes "erases that fine line between surrealism and realism." Buckley Smith is the artist and this is one of his favorite motifs. Daniel and Buckley met years ago. In an area steeped in maritime history and freckled with shipwrights, artists and sailors, their meeting and fellowship was, in hindsight, inevitable. A longtime friend, "he loves collaborating with other artists, and is always open to new ideas." One of those ideas, was to somehow come up with a logo for Bufflehead Sailing Charters. The resulting image is so detailed and unique that a bunch of printers were baffled as to how to put it onto a shirt. Luckily, an equally collaborative printer was found, and the result is an artfully surreal image in the inimitable style of a Buckley Smith original - that is also a wonderful logo capturing the spirit of sailing Maine and the renowned locale of beautiful Penobscot Bay. |
Buckley Smith
Local"Thanks Buckley!" Here's Buckley getting personal delivery of a Bufflehead t-shirt featuring his own design.
Buckley's cheery, cozy boat. "Sweet Chariot," is a rebuilt Northwest Pacific salmon trawler. This picture is from a fine summer charter weaving out through the interesting craft of Rockland's harbor. Buckley was spotted, enjoying the fine summer day from the stern of his unique boat, and we swept by to say "hi." Then, pirouetting in tight quarters under sail, slid by close enough to toss the shirt to him. |
LovedSummering locally, Buckley is beloved here in Maine year round.
In this picture, Buckley was working on a piece behind the performers at the 2016 talent show of the Windjammer Festival in Camden. Here he takes a short break while Daniel was juggling fire in his routine, jokingly waving him away from catching his canvas on fire! |
ProlificBuckley has built boats and built homes, expanded into oil painting from his charcoal, graphite, pen & ink works and even done wood sculpture and furniture.
His commissioned works are in many local estates and public spaces, and internationally adorn numerous businesses. He travels installing murals worldwide, commissioned in private homes. He has more t-shirts that are (almost) as cool as the Bufflehead ones that he made for us. |
"All in all, Buckley Smith literally lives his art. He has built boats and sailed them half way round the world, designed and built two homes for his family, and is constantly working on his art." |
